| Piece | Movement Rules |

| King (Wang) | Can move horizontally, vertically or diagonally, but only one step at a time |
| Queen (After) | Can move horizontally, straight, or diagonally with unlimited steps, but cannot jump over other pieces. The most powerful piece in chess |
| Rook (Car) | Can move horizontally or vertically, but not diagonally. Generally cannot jump over other pieces |
| Bishop (Elephant) | Moves only diagonally with unlimited squares, cannot jump over pieces. Two bishops per side, one in white and one in black |
| Knight (Horse) | Moves sideways then straight or straight then sideways. Can jump over pieces (no "bad horse leg" restriction like in Chinese chess) |
| Pawn (Soldier) | Moves straight forward only, one square at a time (first move can be up to two squares). Captures diagonally forward |
