Chinese Chess Rules

King (Wang)

Moves horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, but only one step at a time.

Queen (After)

Moves horizontally, vertically, or diagonally with unlimited steps, but cannot jump over other pieces. The most powerful piece in chess.

Rook (Car)

Moves horizontally or vertically without diagonal movement. Generally cannot jump over other pieces.

Bishop (Elephant)

Moves only diagonally with unlimited squares, cannot jump over pieces. Each side has two bishops, one white and one black.

Knight (Horse)

Moves in an L-shape: two squares in one direction then one square perpendicular. Can jump over other pieces without "bad horse leg" restrictions found in Chinese chess.

Pawn (Soldier)

Moves forward one square at a time (two squares on first move). Captures diagonally - if an opponent's piece is diagonally adjacent, the pawn can capture it and occupy that square.
